Job Description Summary

Position is full-time during the Fall and Spring semesters (August - May), and follows the University academic calendar with rotating weekend coverage. Reduced hours available during Summer semesters (June and July), with no weekends. The goal of this position is to contribute to student health and academic success. This may include outreach to students who may be hesitant, marginalized, or unaware of our services.

This position is not eligible for sponsorship of non-immigrant or immigrant visa status through Wake Forest University. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions

Performance Expectations

Clinical Duties

  • Prepares patients for examination by obtaining vital signs, medical histories, and chief complaints.
  • Rooms patients and assists providers during examinations and minor procedures.
  • Collects, labels, and processes laboratory specimens (e.g., blood, urine, and other samples) in accordance with established protocols.
  • Performs point-of-care testing and documents results accurately.
  • Provides patient education, including discharge instructions and guidance on self-care, prevention, and follow-up care.
  • Maintains exam rooms to ensure cleanliness, appropriate stocking of supplies, and adherence to infection prevention and control standards.
  • Participates in rotating laboratory coverage, including occasional weekend shifts and additional coverage as needed.
  • Performs all duties and documentation in accordance with legal, regulatory, fiscal, and accreditation standards (AAAHC)
  • Adheres to patient confidentiality and documentation, and follows established policies and procedures.
  • Participates in quality improvement, safety, and infection control standards and drills.

Administrative Duties

  • Assists with appointment scheduling, patient check-in/check-out, and coordination of daily clinic flow.
  • Supports referral processes, including facilitating communication and follow-up with students as directed.
  • Collaborates with clinical and administrative staff to support efficient clinic operations and high-quality patient care.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Graduated from an accredited school of Medical Assisting; AAMA or RMA certification required.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with multicultural populations.
  • Positive attitude, maturity, professionalism, dedication, flexibility, and customer service skills required.
  • Ability to exercise skills in the area of initiative, problem solving, decision-making and multi-tasking.
  • Ability to make decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues. Maintain privacy of University and medical records.
  • Ability to gain competency with electronic medical record software.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • 2 years of experience in a primary care outpatient setting.
  • Experience working with a college-age population, preferably at a campus health clinic.
  • Experience working in a CLIA-certified laboratory.

Accountabilities

  • Complies with CLIA, OSHA, AAAHC, and other applicable standards.
  • Serves as a designated essential employee; required to report to campus or remain on duty to support students' well-being and campus continuity during inclement weather, university closures, or other emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasionally moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 30 pounds in all directions.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Constantly moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one workstation to another.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.

Environmental Conditions

  • Occasionally exposed to low and/or high temperatures, noisy environments, and hazardous conditions.
