Position Summary:

The Hutchinson County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications to join our team as a Deputy Sheriff to provide law enforcement services throughout the County, including several surrounding towns. Being a Deputy Sheriff with our organization means upholding the Hutchinson County Sheriff's Office mission to preserve public safety and quality of life in Hutchinson County.

Our responsibilities are: Investigate illegal or suspicious activities. Conduct investigations. Interview victims and witnesses. Gather evidence. Enforce traffic laws. Maintain traffic flow at accidents. Assist accident victims. Investigate the cause of accidents. Issue citations. Serve warrants, subpoenas, complaints, and summonses. Perform civil process procedures including executions, foreclosures, civil paper service, and collection of fees. Locate and take individuals into custody on arrest warrants. Complete and maintain accurate records and report concerning crimes, incidents, information, traffic accidents, etc. Conduct staff training and development. Respond to dispatch calls. Mediate disputes. Respond to questions, complaints and requests for information and/or assistance from the public, media, legal, and medical staff, various agencies, etc. Administer first aid and CPR. Safely and appropriately use weapons, vehicle, and equipment as well as maintain. Provide testimony when required. Provide traffic control and police protection for special events. Provide community outreach. Attend meetings and ongoing trainings.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies/complaints, protecting people and property, and enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws.
  • Interview complainants, witnesses, and defendants; prepare appropriate charges to book arrested suspects.
  • Serve civil process and criminal warrants.
  • Transport prisoners to courtrooms, prisons/jails and medical facilities
  • Carry out orders and enforce directions from State and Federal Court Systems
  • Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic and criminal cases.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • A two-year degree in law enforcement studies or related field
  • Ability to control emotions and focus on professional duties and obligations in all circumstances, regardless of provocations or stresses encountered.
  • Verbal communication skills to convey information to others in a calm, clear, and purposeful speaking voice in all circumstances.
  • Ability to create accurate, clear, concise, comprehensive, relevant, and grammatically correct documents.
  • Interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships with team members (peers, supervisors, and subordinates) required to provide superior services in the public interest.
  • Skill and strength to use appropriate physical force, including deadly force, when necessary, to prevent the imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to others or self.

Examination, Testing, and Certification Requirements:

  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must have fingerprints taken by a qualified law enforcement officer.
  • Must be of good moral character.
  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. certification.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be Certified by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy.
  • Must be examined by a licensed physician who certifies, on forms prescribed by the commission, that the applicant is able to perform the duties of a law enforcement officer.
  • Must be interviewed in person. The interview shall include questions to determine the applicant’s general suitability for law enforcement service including appearance, personality, temperament, ability to communicate, and other characteristics reasonably necessary to the performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer.
  • Has not unlawfully used any prescribed drug, controlled substance, or marijuana within one year before the time of application for certification and pass a drug test.
  • Background check to include, but not limited to, previous/present employment, social media accounts, driving history, criminal history, personal references, and credit report.
  • Is eligible to reapply for certification, if the person has for any reason failed to successfully complete the basic law enforcement training program.
  • Has not had his/her certification revoked, voluntarily surrendered certification, had an application for certification refused, or been dismissed from the basic training program unless the commission, upon application, declares him/her eligible for employment or certification.
  • Has not become ineligible for employment or certification as a law enforcement officer in any other state, as a result of any proceedings involving any revocation, suspension, surrender of, or resignation or dismissal from certification, employment or training, unless the commission, upon application, declares the person eligible for employment or certification in South Dakota.
