Job Title: Paralegal
Employment/FLSA Status: Full-time/Exempt
Location: Indianapolis, IN (Hybrid)
Reports To: Supervising Custody Attorney
What You’ll Do
As the sole paralegal supporting the Custody Team, you’ll play a pivotal role in the lifecycle of each custody case—from intake to closure. With a deep knowledge of our processes and systems, you’ll be a dependable, collaborative team member working closely with attorneys and Guardians ad Litem (GALs) to ensure high-quality advocacy and legal service. While you don’t supervise others, your experience and problem-solving instincts help guide team operations and support volunteers.
Your Key Responsibilities
• Open, maintain, and close custody case files, including preparing initial pleadings, managing Clio records, and tracking outcomes and volunteer hours.
• Support volunteer GALs throughout case involvement, including preparing Oaths and Acceptances, providing background checks and records, assisting with file reviews, and offering troubleshooting support.
• Draft, edit, and file legal documents and correspondence, including motions, letters to counsel and parties, and other pleadings as requested by attorneys.
• Manage and monitor case-related communication, including shared voicemail, faxes, and coordination with court staff.
• Track and process GAL invoices, payments, and fee waivers using QuickBooks; maintain records for internal and grant reporting purposes.
• Attend and actively participate in team, program, and agency-wide meetings.
• Maintain confidentiality and compliance with GAL guidelines, legal ethics, and internal policies.
• Assist with volunteer GAL trainings and data gathering for VOCA and other grant reports as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent paralegal experience.
• Demonstrated experience in a legal setting, preferably in family law or child advocacy.
• Proficiency with legal drafting, court e-filing, and case management systems (Clio, QuickBooks, Odyssey, MyCase, etc.).
• Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, and trauma-informed advocacy.
What Makes You Stand Out
• Deep familiarity with the custody-specific needs of children and families in high-conflict litigation.
• Skilled in navigating court and legal systems with professionalism, empathy, and accuracy.
• Proactive problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
• Experience working with volunteers or in community-focused legal programs.
Tech Know-How
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams).
• Proficient in case management and e-filing systems, including Clio, the Indiana E-Filing System, and Odyssey.
• Skilled in legal research and public access tools, such as Lexis, Doxpop, MyCase, and Data Vance.
• Familiar with time tracking and invoicing platforms, such as QuickBooks.
Physical Requirements
This hybrid position operates in both professional office and remote settings and requires regular use of standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and copiers. The role may occasionally involve evening or weekend hours. Physical requirements include frequent speaking, listening, walking, standing, reaching, and the ability to lift and carry materials. Occasional travel by car is required for meetings and other work-related activities.
Core Competencies
As a paralegal for Kids' Voice, you bring deep knowledge, reliability, and initiative to the legal team. You manage complex tasks with accuracy and efficiency, supporting attorneys through case preparation, document drafting, and client communication. With strong judgment and attention to detail, you serve as a steady resource across the custody program, helping ensure deadlines are met, records are organized, and families are served with professionalism and care.
Compensation & Benefits
• Salary Range: $50-55,000/year commensurate with experience
• Benefits: A generous leave policy, health insurance, 401(k), ongoing professional development, and a mission-driven, collaborative team culture.
